13 March 2015 - I have been an outspoken advocate of Augmented Reality needing to be a Five Senses experience simply because our 'reality' experience involves all five, 24/7.  I have been working with a stealth start up in the process of bringing context driven fragrance and scent dispensing into the wearable technology space. More on that sometime soon :-)

As a followup to the Wearable Technology Show this past week, I met with Adrian David Cheok, Professor of Pervasive Computing at City University London and Founder and Director of the Mixed Reality Lab in Singapore.

He introduced me to Scentee, a scent spraying APPessory to iOS and Android Smartphones. A bit large to fit in your pocket, but not bad for a first pass at producing smells on demand or remotely over long distances.

Scentee also is the technology for an Oscar Meyer Bacon campaign that made the technology and an APP called "Wake Up and Smell the Bacon" available to lucky contest winners.

Basically when your alarm on your phone goes off, it makes the sizzling sound and produces a puff of the smell of Bacon to get you interested in actually getting up and cooking some!

This all Caught My Eye and my Olfactories!

It's a start...

More to come! Watch this space!

The Premium Watch Brands Make their Move

IMHO
Starting now (March 2015), the "Connected Watch" (aka, Smart Watch) sector will be dominated by existing watch brands that know their customers well and they will now add appropriate features and applications in their next models. Partly because it's the next value add they can make to their products and simply because they can - the electronics fit in without changing the profile of their products, they know what features would turn on their brand fans next and their consumer base all have smartphones.
These brands, plus a precious few - Apple, Pebble, Martian and a few other "Smart Watch" pioneers will be the dominant players in this category going forward. (R.I.P. to most of the others)
Other notable evidence - Guess Watches with Martian inside. Swarovski Shine with Misfit Shine hiding inside their latest jewellery collection.

GUESS CONNECT, Powered by Martian

Another example of a Fashion Brand with a strong market following partnering with one of the leading wearable technology companies. I wrote this up last year as the Martian Notifier because of it's styling and functionality and have been wearing it for quite a while because it looks like a normal watch, but has valuable functionality hiding inside.

Adding the Guess styling and brand to the equation could be a winner.

GUESS CONNECT, Powered by Martian. Looking forward to trying one of these!

A Wearable with a Mission - OhMiBod

It was inevitable - connected marital aids. I can't really expand on this too much, but I think if I describe some of the functions, you will be able to take it from there. I must admit, the person at the booth certainly understood the use cases!

Stimulation in cadence to heart rate, music, various settings, etc. etc. etc.

Plus remote control stimulation. The world is your oyster! This is definitely a notable step up from the CuteCircuit Hug Shirt!

For me, the hit of CES 2015 and the most significant announcement this year was the collaboration between Misfit and Swarovski to produce a "collection" of wearable tracker jewellery accessories that enable a Swarovski brand fan to wear the tracker device in all aspects of their daily routine, yet never look out of place or the least bit geeky.
A lilac-colored crystal version to be released later in the year will have a multifaceted crystal face that harnesses the sun's energy, feeds it into embedded solar panels, and powers the device. Swarovski says you can charge with almost any light source, and only 15 minutes will ensure that the device never needs recharging.
All very impressive technologically, but most women will buy the Shine because it’s a beautiful Swarovski crystal (with hidden functionality).
They will then buy the practical workout band plus other pieces of jewellery that can house the Shine crystal for daily leisure activities, work routine or for evenings out.
BTW, the jewellery looks good and some can be worn without the Swarovski Shine in them as well. See their promotional video here.
Noticeably different than most videos produced describing fitness trackers!

And valuable data for medical diagnosis as well. All from the convenience of your bathroom.

Compare that to what your doctor has to go through to get the same or even a subset of these results.

The Scanadu Scanaflo™ will test for levels of glucose, protein, leukocytes, nitrites, blood, bilirubin, urobilinogen, microalbumin, creatinine, ketone, specific gravity, and pH in urine.

Scanaflo™ is a urine test kit that will empower people to monitor their health at home. It is designed to give early information about liver, kidneys, urinary tract, or metabolism.

Simply expose the 'paddle' to urine sample, wait a minute for sensors to change colour, photograph results and iPhone App completes and records the results!

This information could be particularly effective for pregnant women, seniors, diabetics, and people who have just started taking medications. A smartphone app guides you through the test procedure, automatically processes the test results, stores them, and explains them.

Scanadu Update - Scout ready to ship.

Scanadu first introduced this and it Caught My Eye last year at CES, but got to use one this year.

As if it is reading your mind, the Scanadu Scout™ provides valuable data about your body. All that information just by placing it on your forehead. Takes about 10 seconds. Imagine all the possibilities.

Holding the Scout between thumb and forefinger, touch the sensor edge to your temple and it measures your temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen levels. This takes about 10 seconds!

Innovation from Scanadu ready to ship for users in clinical trial - me included, so more on this as it progresses.

Oh, yes and a new product, Scanaflo urinalysis unit also Caught My Eye (separate entry)

Roost have developed a smoke alarm reporting system in a 9 volt battery profile so it fits in and works in any smoke alarm. Another example of being able to use existing components and technology to bring the huge installed base into the IoT. Spoke to Roost's CMO David Henry at CES Unwired.

Looks just like a 9 volt battery and has two smaller Lithium batteries inside so maintains the 5+ year power supply, but also has WiFi, a processor and software, an audio detector tuned into alarm sound and no matter where you are, notifies to your smartphone when alarm has sounded or if the battery needs replacing. RRP $35. Availability May this year. Innovative and I want a couple, but not sure about the price point versus 9V battery...
